Glossary ~I, J & K~

Within this glossary we define nearly 300 terms used in quality management. Some are taken from international standards, others are commonly understood English definitions and most we have derived from experience . Identification - The act of identifying an entity, i.e. giving it a set of characteristics by which it is recognizable as a member of a group

International Accreditation Forum (IAF) - The world association of Conformity Assessment Accreditation Bodies and other bodies interested in conformity assessment in the fields of management systems, products, services, personnel and other similar programmes of conformity assessment. Its primary function is to develop a single worldwide program of conformity assessment that reduces risk for business and its customers by assuring them that accredited certificates may be relied upon. International Automotive Task Force (IATF) The IATF is an “ad hoc” group formed to provide improved quality products to automotive customers worldwide.

The IATF members are ANFIA, BMW, DaimlerChrysler Corporation, Fiat Auto, FIEV, Ford Motor Company, General Motors Corporation, PSA Peugeot Citroen, Renault, VDA, Volkswagen. Additional members are AIAG and SMMT. Suppliers are represented through their national organizations

International Organization for Standardization (ISO)  - ISO is a network of the national standards institutes of 148 countries, on the basis of one member per country, with a Central Secretariat in Geneva, Switzerland, that coordinates the system.  Because "International Organization for Standardization" would have different abbreviations in different languages ("IOS" in English, "OIN" in French for Organisation internationale de normalisation), it was decided at the outset to use a word derived from the Greek isos, meaning "equal". Therefore, whatever the country, whatever the language, the short form of the organization's name is always ISO.

Implement.  - To carry out a directive

Implementation Audit - An audit carried out to establish whether actual practices conform to the documented quality system. N.B. also referred to as a Conformance Audit or Compliance Audit. For more on auditing see Auditor Questions

Importance of activities in auditing - The relative importance of the contribution an activity makes to the fulfilment of an organization's objectives. For more on auditing see Auditor Questions

Improvement plan - A plan designed to bring about beneficial improvement irrespective of the scale of improvement

Indexing - A means of enabling information to be located

In-process - Between the beginning and the end of a process

Inspection  - The examination of an entity to determine whether it conforms to prescribed requirements. (see also ISO 9000 clause 3.8.2)

Inspection authority - The person or organization that has been given the right to perform inspections

Inspection, measuring and test equipment - Devices used to perform inspections, measurements and tests

Installation.  - The process by which an entity is fitted into larger entity

Intellectual property - Creations of the mind: inventions, literary and artistic works, and symbols, names, images, and designs used in commerce. Intellectual property is divided into two categories: Industrial property and Copyright

Integrated management - The understanding and effective direction of every aspect of an organisation so that the needs and expectations of all stakeholders are equitably satisfied by the best use of all resources.

Integrated management system - A management system in which all the processes serve the system objectives and where these system objectives have been derived from stakeholder needs and expectations.

Interested party - Person or group having an interest in the performance or success of an organization - includes: Customers, owners, employees, contractors, suppliers, investors, unions, partners or society

Internal audits - See first party audits

International Registry of Certificated Auditors (IRCA) - A UK body within the Institute of Quality Assurance (IQA) that administers a registration scheme for auditors of management systems and for providers of auditor training. IRCA registers first, second and third party auditors. It is not the only auditor registration body in the UK, another is the ASCB (E)

Issues of documents - The revision state of a document

ISO 9000  - (1) A family of international standards the purpose of which is to assist organizations implement and operate effective quality management systems. The key standards in the family are ISO 9000, ISO 9001 and ISO 9004. (2) ISO 9000 is an international standard the purpose of which is to facilitate a common understanding of the concepts and language used in the ISO 9000 family of standards.
