Purpose and mission/FAQ 1 / FAQ 2 / FAQ 3

Is it essential  to have separate purpose and mission statements?

Rather than have two separate statements, some organization combine purpose and mission into one statement.

If the purpose statement gives justification for the mission it might be more coherent to merge the two together.
