There are several approaches you can take if you
don't
have a documented quality management system that meets ISO 9001:2008. The chances are you will not have
a process based management system and by that we mean a system of
interconnected and interacting processes that enable the organization to achieve its
mission and satisfy the needs and expectation of all its stakeholders.
What you might have is a Manual that mirrors the
sections of the standard, a series of documents that you might call
process descriptions but in reality they are the old procedures given
a new image by converting the text into flow diagrams. What you are
likely to have overlooked is that a process based management system is
result oriented. If all you have done is to convert text into flow
charts - nothing has changed except the way information is presented.
The objective of AS9100C was to improve product quality in the
aerospace supply chain - not make the documents prettier! Therefore
the place to start is not with the procedures but with the Mission.
So how do you go about it? Well you start by
defining the business goals, then determining customer requirements
related to these goals. Next you identify what the business outputs
need to be to satisfy you customers and then identify the processes
that will deliver these outputs. Only then can you begin to define
your processes and of course when you do this, remember you are
defining how results are achieved not how tasks are performed.
